Effects of Forest Biomass Use on Watershed Processes in the Western United States

چکیده

With increasing energy costs, society is looking at alternative energy sources. One potential energy source that is currently underused in the United States is forest biomass (Rummer et al. 2003). However, if forests are subject to a significant increase in biomass removal for energy production, then it is possible that hydrologic resources may be adversely affected. This report describes forest hydrologic processes, looks at the impacts of biomass use on those processes, and then describes an approach for watershed analysis to quantify those impacts. Although many of the principles discussed in this article apply to all forests, this article focuses on forest watershed processes common in the western United States.

Cumulative Watershed Effects of Fuel Management in the Western United States

Fire suppression in the last century has resulted in forests with excessive amounts of biomass, leading to more severe wildfires, covering greater areas, requiring more resources for suppression and mitigation, and causing increased onsite and offsite damage to forests and watersheds. Forest managers are now attempting to reduce this accumulated biomass by thinning, prescribed fire, and other m...

Effects of Rainfall and Runoff Variables on Phosphorus Loss in a Forest Watershed, Iran

Suspended sediment resulted from distributed soil erosions facilitates nutrient transportation and influences soil depletion. Phosphorus (P) is one of the major limiting nutrients controlling eutrophication of surface water. Irregular P load pulsed by heavy rainfall may damage the ecological quality of downstream waters. P transport study during rainfall events is important in both predicting a...

The effect of forest degradation and land use change on some soil biological indexes (case study: Persian oak (Quercus brantii Lindl) forests in Fars province)

To understand the effects of forest degradation and their conversion to farmlands, the current research was conducted with emphasis on some soil biological indexes. In this regard, two different land use including an oak natural stand and a farm next to the forest and under cultivation since 20 years ago were surveyed. Within the each land use, three sampling plots with 10×10 meter dimension we...
